Itineraries to the East. The Cinque Terre
Monterosso (50 minutes)
The most westerly town in the Cinque Terre, which can be reached by foot by following the most difficult stretch of the "Sentiero Azzurro" footpath, is Monterosso al Mare. Its amazing beaches, the marvellous sheer cliffs and the crystal clear waters of the sea make this one of the most welcoming villages on the eastern Liguran Riviera. Whilst you sunbathe you can admire the Gigante di Fegina: a 14-meter tall statue set on a rock.
Vernazza (1h and 10 minutes)
An evocative footpath that winds its way amongst Mediterranean scrub and partially abandoned plots of land, reaches the highest point of its climb as it leads us to Vernazza. Here there are plenty of important architectural elements: the Church of Vernazza, the Parish Church of Santa Margherita d’Antiochia, which overlooks the sea and the tiny harbour. The Doria Castle also looks seaward.
Corniglia (1h and 10 minutes)
Corniglia is set on a rocky promontory overlooking the sea. Here amongst the slate doorways and alleys you will find a narrow street that will lead you to the Belvedere di Corniglia. The parish church of San Pietro is one of the most interesting Ligurian gothic monuments in the Cinque Terre.
Manarola (1h and 10 minutes)
A pedestrian road known as the Via dell'Amore starts at Manarola. The road winds along the coast, on a sheer drop over the sea. In a dominating position at the top of the town we find the gothic parish church dating from 1338.
Riomaggiore (1h and 15 minutes)
Riomaggiore is the most eastern of the Cinque Terre, set in a narrow valley of the rio Maior (covered) whose course determined the layout of the town. In the upper part of the town we find the parish church of San Giovanni Battista. From here we descend towards the Oratorio dei Disciplinati dating from the XVI century. In an elevated position on the opposite side we find the conspicuous remains of a castle dating from the XV - XVI centuries.
The footpaths of the Cinque Terre. Day Trip
The Sentiero Azzurro and the Via dell’Amore. Leading from Monterosso to Riomaggiore, this footpath is 12 km long and it takes about 5 hours to complete. The stretch between Vernazza and Coniglia is considered one of the most spectacular. The Via dell’Amore includes the stretch between Manarola and Riomaggiore and is not particularly difficult apart from the initial stretch that includes 70 steps, after which the path winds between the mountains and the sea.
The Cinque Terre High Road: the Sentiero Del Crinale/Sentiero Rosso Number 1. This path is 40 km long and it takes over 10 hours to cover the stretch from start to finish. It leads from Portovenere to Levanto and although it isn’t particularly difficult you still need to be pretty fit and to make a few stops along the way.
The Sentiero dei Santuari. As you can guess from the name this footpath links the sanctuaries of the Cinque Terre: the Sanctuary of Soviore, the Sanctuary of Reggio, the Sanctuary of San Bernardino, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Salute, the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Montenero.
Lerici (50 minutes)
This ancient fishing village of Roman origin is overlooked by the imposing medieval castle. The village is full of villas, gardens, beaches and its centre is full of original historical elements of note. Take a trip to nearby Tellaro to admire the famous church built on the rocks.
La Spezia (55 minutes)
The distinctiveness of the city of La Spezia consists in its having had the marvellous “Gulf of Poets” immortalised in the romantic verses of Byron and Shelley. The city holds a host of surprises of a cultural character, such as the Civic Museum, the Amedeo Lia Museum, the Palazzo delle Arti and the Museo del Sigillo.
Portovenere (1hour and 10 minutes)
This picturesque medieval village is situated on the western shores of the Gulf of La Spezia. The characteristic tower-houses lined up on the calata Doria, the Genovese Castle and the church dedicated to Saint Peter dominate the sea, making the place one of a kind. Opposite we find the Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto Islands which can be easily reached by boat.
